The facts will be in the Bulletin every day, please check them out online. So, here's what you need to do: 1. Read the “Did You Know” fact in the announcements; 2. Submit your answer to the question on Friday during lunch periods; and 3. Find out on Monday if your CORRECT answer was selected as the weekly winner. Let’s learn some interesting facts about America’s rich history and enter to win some neat prizes! Monday, February 1, 2016 Fact of the Day: JOSEPH WINTERS was born in Leesburg, Virginia on August 29, 1824. Watching fire fighters struggle to unload heavy ladders to reach fires as buildings grew increasingly taller led one man to an invention that has saved many lives. He was African American inventor Joseph Winters, who patented a folding ladder mounted directly on fire wagons in 1878 for the city of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His invention allowed firemen to quickly and easily reach upper floors to rescue trapped people and spray water where it was needed. Winters’ invention proved itself in a big fire in Baltimore in 1904 that burned many businesses and homes. In the U.S. today, there are 293,000 firefighters, just over 8 percent of them African American. (Powell 2/1)

During the month of February, Vernon Hills High School will celebrate: BLACK HISTORY MONTH. GARRETT A. MORGAN was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His inventions were driven by his desire to find solutions to “everyday” problems that he saw. He saw that people who fought fires and/or worked in tunnels where there was a possibility of inhaling toxic air had no means of protection. So, in 1912, he designed a safety hood and patented it as a “Breathing Device”, which later became known as the gas mask. The first recorded use of his “Breathing Device” was in 1916, when an explosion occurred in a tunnel being dug under Lake Erie. Morgan, along with his brother and other men wore the mask and rescued several of the workers. After witnessing an accident on a roadway, Morgan decided a device was needed to keep cars, buggies, and pedestrians from colliding. His traffic signal was designed to stand on a street corner and notify vehicles and walkers whether they should stop or go. After receiving a patent in 1923 for a 3-way traffic light, the rights to the invention were eventually purchased by General Electric. (Powell 2/8)
